PURPOSE
A Training Needs Analysis (TNA) helps us take a vague training request and turn it into an actionable program that improves employee performance. We do this by defining clear goals with the client stakeholders and subject matter experts. We review proven techniques for gathering essential data in and discuss ways to analyze the data so we can draw conclusions that will enable us to craft future training programs that are more effective and meaningful than those built without a TNA.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated TNA summarized the training needs for the second phase of the project, which included upgrades to the geographical land mapping system and what employees needed to know to access this new information. As you can imagine, the electric company is not the only utility provider that buries equipment and cable underground. This system upgrade would provide visibility to other utilities' equipment and data (e.g., gas lines, water lines, sewer, communication cables). When this training was deployed the audience was able to successfully research this information and provide it to the field personnel so they could perform their work with confidence.
PURPOSE
A Job Task Analysis (JTA) provides the objective criteria that leadership and management need to make informed decisions regarding a given role within a company. The JTA details help in determining currently qualified personnel within the company, future hires qualifications, job performance, job reviews, and compensation ranges.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated Job Task Analysis (JTA) defined the high-level jobs and tasks associated with a Testing and Commissioning Engineer. This role had specific duties that were broken into sub-duties and within the sub-duties are the tasks. The tasks define specifications regarding the skills, knowledge, and abilities.
[Note - page 4 includes the Qualification Card information that categorizes level of proficiency.]
PURPOSE
The design phase and design document are the time for brainstorming, prototyping, and testing. The better the work we do during this phase the more time and energy we save and the more likely the final product is engaging and an effective learning experience. It is a record for all to agree with as it pertains to the vision, strategy, objectives, audience, and timeline.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated document represents key information, resources, learning objectives, assessment styles, and the overall strategy to prepare Testing and Commissioning Engineers to plan, schedule, communicate, and systematically execute Testing and Commissioning activities to ensure project outcomes are in accordance with TRC standards.
PURPOSE
A storyboard is a document with a series of columns and rows representing the text, visuals, and actions of a learning experience (e.g., WBT, microlearning unit, video). It is key to establishing a course's narrative flow, defining the what, where, how, and why.
Typically in eLearning design, we collaborate with subject matter experts, media producers to show more than we tell, and a storyboard helps define what we intend to show and display on-screen. It is great tool that we use to ensure the concepts, order of content, branching logic, visual elements, and associated text are correct before we develop.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated storyboard was a roadmap that defined the key topics we needed to teach Testing and Commissioning Engineers about one of the most important tools they would use in the field, a digital multimeter. All TRC engineers and new hires are familiar with digital multimeters, but they are not well versed in the performance attributes and limitations of the FLUKE 1587. Therefore, we felt it was imperative to create a baseline for all personnel and deploy this content via a WBT course.

PURPOSE
Sometimes we need to create a meaningful training course for our organization, but we are constrained by budgets, timelines, development tools, stakeholder expectations. These pressures often constrain the abilities of traditional instructional design methods so a simpler, faster, and more on-the-fly and collaborative model is used.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated PowerPoint and script was created in a matter of days for a WBT instead of using a traditional methodology (i.e., ADDIE). We designed and develop in a faster and more collaborative style. This document was created in response to several mis-operations and incidents that occurred within a short period of time. The result was a stand-down at several project sites until each crew was successfully trained in the purpose, value, and application of Human Performance tools.
The PPT/script was an effective outline and resource during the kick-off meeting, preparation, design, and development phases as stakeholders do not like surprises. If an issue presented itself, we work together to find the best solution, so we stayed on target.
PURPOSE
Web-Based Training (WBT) uses electronic technologies to access educational curriculum outside of a traditional classroom. Learners can access information from everywhere, on various devices, and at any time.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated WBT was created in response to several mis-operations and incidents that occurred within a short period of time. The result was a work stoppage at several project sites until each field operations crew was successfully trained in the purpose, value, and application of Human Performance tools. It provides an overview of the tools and techniques for identifying risks and error likely situations, and more importantly, eliminating or mitigating the errors that contribute to serious incidents.
PURPOSE
A reference guide is a technical document intended to provide information and instruction on accessing and performing tasks within a given system. These often illustrate tasks with associated images, performance steps, and explanations on how to use a system effectively and efficiently.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated reference guide was deployed during an instructor-led course where the learners would observe a scenario or task and discuss the process. Then, the learners completed scenario-based activities using the guide, database, and a skill practice workbook to complete a given task. Each exercise was monitored by the instructors and a wrap-up conversation was held to ensure comprehension and understanding. This guide embedded within the database as a Just-In-Time reference and utilized by employees as they interacted with Charge Ready clients.
PURPOSE
Just-in-time (JIT) learning is all about acquiring skills, knowledge, and abilities when and where you need it. The trick to designing a quality resource is we have to have a deep understanding of the task. That understanding will clarify what information the learner needs, when they need it, and what the best format, which can be represented as a one-page Quick Reference Card (QRC).
SAMPLE SUMMARY
After completing this ILT course, we noticed most learners only needed a QRC to jog their memory on a task they infrequently performed (i.e., download or reformat a recorded meeting). However, we added a bit more detail such as images and step callouts to help them succeed in performing the task. We enjoyed the feedback as the learner's shared their confidence with the QRC resources and continued to request them for new tasks.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This WBT was created in response to a client requesting proactive or additional training for Testing & Commissioning crews working at their sites. They liked the Human Performance Tool WBT (above) so much they wanted more! The proactive WBTs were designed to enable field ops personnel with the skills and knowledge they needed before arriving at the client's job sites.
This abbreviated WBT defines the importance of daily task planning and why it is an essential part of the day for the team. The crew must identify and evaluate safety hazards and system operational hazards associated with each task and continuously review the mitigation defenses in place, so they establish the highest level of protection as possible.
PURPOSE
This video was created to help commercial and business customers understand the importance and value of the Charge Ready Program. We needed to create a "hook" to interest potential clients and often a video does better than a pamphlet.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
The Charge Ready Program was created to support California’s zero-emission policies, as it made the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations easier and more cost effective for businesses and properties within California and SCE's service territory.
PURPOSE
An instructor guide (and participant) guide were designed to provide the instructor with all the course prep information, instructor cues, knowledge checks, activities, schedule, and materials needed to successfully complete a training. The goal of this guide is to standardize a course; if a different instructor were to deliver the training, the participants would receive a similar learning experience.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated PowerPoint was developed for the Process Excellence course where Testing and Commissioning Engineers learned to plan, schedule, communicate, and systematically execute Testing and Commissioning activities to ensure project outcomes are in accordance with TRC standards.
[Note - a montage of this course being deployed is available.]
PURPOSE
A rubric is a set of criteria for grading assignments. They contain evaluative criteria, quality definitions for those criteria at particular levels of achievement, and a scoring strategy. A knowledge assessment is intended to measure a test-taker's knowledge, skill, and/or aptitude in a given subject matter.
The course knowledge checks, lab activities, exercises, rubrics, and knowledge assessments are directly tied to the course goal and learning objectives.
SAMPLE SUMMARY
This abbreviated rubric is the scoring rubric used to evaluate each participant, during, and after the hands-on exercise for both human performance and technical knowledge regarding a relay identification, isolation, and restoration.
This abbreviated knowledge assessment measures the learner's knowledge as it relates to planning, scheduling, communicating, and systematically executing Testing and Commissioning activities in accordance with company standards.
